WHAT IS FOOD COMBINING?
The basic principle of food combining is very simple: you are not allowed to eat carbohydrates and proteins together during the diet. This means that you have to change your diet: you can no longer put cheese on your bread or eat pulses because they are rich in carbohydrates and proteins.
Background: The inventor of food combinations, William Howard Hay, thought that carbohydrates and proteins are processed differently by the digestive system. By eating them separately, you give the proteins and carbohydrates an optimal environment for digestion, according to Hay. This should relieve the intestines.
In concrete terms, this means that proteins need an acidic environment and carbohydrates need an alkaline environment. According to Hay, carbohydrates are more difficult to digest if they enter the intestine together with proteins. This is because the acidic environment of proteins is opposed to the alkaline environment of carbohydrates. This leads to flatulence, bloating, and weight gain. Conversely, the solution for Hay is a food-combining diet.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FOOD COMBINING?
Salads and vegetables are always good, they are so-called neutral foods. Food combining is not just a diet, but a complete change of diet. The separate intake of nutrients is said to help against bloating, flatulence, and stomach pain. According to its proponents, food combining also has the following positive properties:
- helps you lose weight,
- balances the acid-base balance,
- provides more energy,
- provides plenty of vitamins, trace elements, and minerals,
- good for allergy sufferers.
Note: There must be at least four to five hours between meals. This gives the enzymes enough time to be absorbed by the body and not get in each other’s way.
DISADVANTAGES: WHAT SPEAKS AGAINST FOOD COMBINING?
It has not been scientifically proven that carbohydrates and proteins can only be digested separately. In addition, many foods contain both proteins and carbohydrates. The body can still process them.
With a food-combining diet, there is also a risk of eating a one-sided diet and too many cereal products.
If you no longer eat rice with your vegetables, your body needs other filling foods. This is often meat, fish, or high-fat foods such as avocado. This quickly gives the food-combining diet a miserable ecological balance.
Of course, nobody wants to eat only cabbage in winter and do without potatoes. A diet based on seasonal and regional foods is therefore complicated with a food combining diet.
LOSE WEIGHT WITH A FOOD COMBINING DIET?
Satisfaction and serenity is the best diet. The fact that you can lose weight on a food-boosting diet is not due to how you eat. Rather, you automatically eat more fruit and vegetables on a combined diet. You also simply eat less throughout the day due to the waiting times between meals. This saves you calories, which leads to weight loss. There is therefore no direct link between weight loss and food combining.
