Many people want to lose weight in the new year – preferably very quickly. Read here why this is not a good resolution. We have tips for natural weight loss without frustration. And if you get frustrated take a break and enjoy the legacy of dead free slot.
Lose a few kilos – the classic New Year’s resolution. In surveys, the majority of respondents say every year that they want to pay more attention to their health, with losing weight at the top of the list.
Losing weight can be good for your health and self-esteem, provided of course that you are actually overweight – and not just suffering from social (illusory) norms that only present certain body images as desirable. And even then, natural and healthy weight loss is much more sensible than any quick weight loss guide.
Our advice: Spare yourself the obsessive desire to lose weight – especially not in a hurry. We’ll tell you 1. why this doesn’t work – and 2. what you should do instead.
It’s simply a stupid idea to lose weight quickly. Where does this desire actually come from? Do your knees and feet really hurt? Is your weight restricting you in your everyday life or your performance? Or do you just want to look like the people in the commercials? Whose appearance is not only polished up with lots of tricks but whose job it is to sell us (often quite superfluous) things and services with their appearance?
LOSING WEIGHT MAKES UNHAPPY
One argument against losing weight as a resolution is that dieting makes you unhappy. There are as many diets as there are promises to lose weight effortlessly: 24-hour diets, oatmeal diets, no-carb diets, low-carb diets, paleo diets, cinnamon diets, food combining diets, glyx diets, and dozens of others.
They all have one thing in common: a diet has little to do with natural weight loss, as it almost always involves more or less radical sacrifice. And going without means dissatisfaction. After all, eating is one of the most beautiful and important things in life. If we are no longer able or allowed to enjoy it, then this is also reflected in our state of mind. And not only there.
WHAT STEPS TO FOLLOW
- listen to your body
Don’t let diets or food trends dictate what you should eat. Listen carefully to your body’s signals: it tells you when you’re hungry when you’re thirsty, when you’re full, or when it needs which foods.
Just because your friends don’t eat wheat, lactose or carbohydrates doesn’t mean you have to. Everyone has their own individual diet.
Of course, if you want to lose weight, it’s important to keep an eye on yourself: When are you really hungry and when are you just snacking out of boredom or habit? The latter doesn’t have to be the case.
- take your time to lose weight healthily
Take your time when eating. Your body will thank you more for a mindful meal than a sandwich you quickly scarfed down on the way from the subway to work. Eating more slowly makes you feel fuller – and naturally helps you lose weight. We often only eat so much because we don’t feel full. It doesn’t come from the stomach but from the head. And we have to give it time.
It also tastes better if you take the time to enjoy your food. If you enjoy cooking, then take the time to do so. It makes you happy and proud. It increases appreciation for your meal – and you are in control of what’s in it.
