Before I enrolled for the PMP exam, I had just worked for more than half a year and was engaged in project management in the manufacturing industry. I had always been in face-to-face classes from the school to the job training, but now I was trying a distance learning class for the first time, and it was a very different experience. I thought I was disciplined enough, after all, at the beginning, I was still following the plan of the SPOTO. As a result, it didn’t last long. But later on, due to the transfer of the staffs in the group, the workload increased by leaps and bounds, and then the study was delayed again and again. So I really didn’t have time to care about my study. It was only in the last month before the exam that I figured out where to find the distance learning course, and I was really a real dud. I didn’t make the most of the last month. But on Sundays, when I was not working, I was able to study for five or six hours. I hope I can bring a little inspiration to you in preparing for the PMP exam.
- Ask questions if you don’t understand.
The first thing you need to do is to ask questions if you don’t understand. I am tired of working and I am too lazy to read every messages because of too many notices.
That’s why I didn’t know where I could find the course until a month before the exam. I would like to tell those of you who are busy preparing for the exam that if you have any doubts, you should seek clarification from your teacher or classmates and collect the course and related materials first for the peace of mind.
If you don’t understand something, ask the teacher for help. If you are too busy to go through all the wrong questions, at least take time to ask the ones that are more frequently wrong.
- Learning strategies
For those who are busy at work, PMBOK may not have time to read it all. If you have time, it is best to read it once. If you can’t, ask your teacher to help you focus on it. The first 5 chapters of the PMBOK were briefly gone over. But I picked up the PMP a month before the exam, and I didn’t have time to read the book. I chose to watch the course videos in conjunction with the lecture notes. I watched all the course videos, at two times speed. Of course, I slowed down the playback speed or even paused when I encountered something difficult to understand and took notes on the handouts. I was able to get a general understanding of the PMP.
- Strategy of finishing questions
I was in a hurry to start doing revision one before I finished the class. While for those who take the better schedule, they finish the questions after take the reviewing. I was quite panicked when the mock results came out, only scoring 89. Then I talked to my classmates and found out that they had all done the topic. I believe in my own understanding, and once I understand the lesson, the questions will also be understood.
After the lesson, I didn’t do any of the topics except for the change questions, so I chose the “shortcut” of listening to the topics directly. After listening to the topics and then doing the revision and mock questions, it worked much better. I was able to take the score about 110. But it is still a bit short of 5A. But that’s okay. I’m getting better. However, there are too many revision questions and mock questions. What should I do if I can’t finish them? I’d rather find a teacher to highlight the key points, choose a few key sets to do, and check the wrong questions in time to do the next set after each set.
The above is the strategy of doing questions during the revision process, but you also need to pay attention to the strategy during the exam. I usually work during the day and do the questions at night, often falling asleep, waking up and doing it again. So I never had more than three hours to finish a set of questions. So I thought I was doing it fast. I thought I was fast, but when it came to the real exam, I found that I didn’t have enough time. Why? Because I was more serious than usual at this time of the year, and secondly, I got the questions in a very unfortunate order, being the first difficult one and then the second easy one. The first 20 questions took me nearly half an hour or so, and I wasted a lot of time by going to the toilet twice in the middle of it. I thought the questions were more difficult than the usual mock questions, so I did them in order until I had only 75 minutes left to do the 100 questions. And I hadn’t even applied my answer card yet. The more I got to the end, the easier the questions became. And I thought if I didn’t finish the questions, I’d lose out. I had to force myself to finish it in one time. I think that if you feel that the topic is difficult, you should choose it intuitively and mark it well first. Don’t be entangled for too long.
